Profile
My name is Sean McSweeney, and it is with great pride and enthusiasm that I serve as the Social Studies Curriculum Director and the District AP Coordinator in District 218. I began my teaching career in 1992 at Richards High School before moving to Bremen High School for ten years. I returned home to District 218 in 2003 in my current position. I live in the Oak Lawn Community, and I have a daughter who will become a Richards H.S. “Bulldog” in September 2017 and another who will join her there in 2019. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at Chicago State University, a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at National-Louis University, and a Certificate of Advanced Study from St. Xavier University.
I am proud and excited to be a member of a Social Studies Department that is PASSIONATE - about content, about innovative teaching techniques, but, maybe MOST importantly, about each student’s growth in AWARENESS of his/her responsibility for the world in which they live. A former UN Secretary once said, "No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime. Young people must be included from birth. A society that cuts off from its youth severs its lifeline." The Social Studies Department believes that we must teach our youth to be positive, active participants in our society and in our government. Our mission is to teach each student to think for him/herself, to develop an informed opinion through research and analysis, and to become an active participant in the democratic process.
